The Teleport Technologist is responsible for the provision of day to day operations and maintenance of the
Montreal Teleport facility, ensuring preset serviceability numbers are met or exceeded.

Main Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on a variety of voice, data, as well as analog and digital audio and video baseband equipment
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on networking hardware, such as routers, switches and hubs
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to IF and RF hardware such as up/down converters, high power amplifiers (KHPA), traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA), modulators and multiplexers.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated Monitoring and Control system (Site Supervision)
  • Update Teleport services documentation as required
  • Assist Network Engineering Division personnel with the implementation of new and expansion services, demonstrating thorough understanding of the systems.
  • Work directly with Telesat customers and/or third party contractors.
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Education & Experience Required

  • 3-year Electronics/Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent

Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge with Satellite, microwave and/or RF transmission
  • Knowledge with digital video compression system SD & HD
  • Understanding of Network fundamentals such as TCP/IP, LAN/WAN
  • Familiarity with interconnection of network devices (complex network architecture) and VPN technology.
  • Ability to demonstrate solid troubleshooting skills
  • 2-3 years experience would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Broadband Access Architecture (DOCSIS, xDSL) is an asset
  • Knowledge of UNIX (or Linux, C++, Visual Basic) is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with RF systems and satellite communications would be an asset

Equipment Used

  • Familiar with various types of telecommunications test equipment
  • Working knowledge of protocol analyzers, data test sets, LAN sniffers, spectrum analyzers.
  • Various network communications and hub systems by vendors such as iDirect, Hughes, Gilat, Cisco, Comtech, Romantis and Juniper. LAN analysis tools such as Wireshark. Monitoring tools like NetVue, Solarwinds, SNMP and Syslog.

Decision Making

  • The Teleport Technologist is expected to make decisions as to the correct course of action to take to rectify an issue with a network or a network component. The Network and Hub Systems Technologist is expected to perform planning in executing on assigned maintenance tasks and duties.

Supervision Exercised

  • The Teleport Technologist is expected to take the lead role in troubleshooting network issues or in implementing changes to a network or hub system. In this role, the Network and Hub Systems Technologist can utilize support from Senior Operations technologists or if required escalate the issue to Network Engineering for providing written or verbal instructions on actions to perform.

Working Conditions

  • The Montreal Teleport is a 8 hours, 5 days per week facility, on rotation On call overnight shift and weekend and statutory holidays; the ability to work in an unsupervised environment (from home), is a requirement of this position.
